About 12 or so of us Mechanical Engineering students made our way over to McVey Elementary School to help a group of 24 fourth graders who were taking part in a 'Space Learning Program' that has been ongoing there for a number of years. Despite waking up at 9:00 AM on a Saturday morning it ended up being a great time because we got to spend time with the kids and give their teachers a bit of a break. First we all introduced ourselves to the class and told them a little about ourselves and why we like engineering and space exploration in general. We hen helped them all build their own model rockets and launched them after we were done. It was pretty great to see them get so excited as each part went together on their rockets until it was a finish product. My favorite conversation of the day was with one of the girls I was helping who was already quite interested in college. She asked me "Is college hard?" and I replied to her "It can be hard, but it can also be a lot of fun." She paused for a few seconds and looked at me quietly and then asked "Does college have a hot tub?" Well, thanks to all the people that came and helped out- Scott, John, Matty Mick, Kinger, Courtney, Mike, Matt, Darren and Joey. Thanks also to Miss Wright for being so great to put it all together. We'll be back next year. |
