It all began one day in senior drafting class where I said to myself, I’m going to build myself a miniature golf course. Well, I soon learned that an entire golf course would be a bit pricey, so I decided I was going to make the best 19th hole on the face of the earth. With my carpenter skills and creativity I knew I could do it. I took some ideas from places I’ve played as well as TV and movies, especially Happy Gilmore. (Damn good movie I might add.) After about 20 trips to the Home Depot and approximately $200 the hole was complete. Well, I know you are excited to see this damn thing so here is how I spent the summer of ’02…

This is the basic frame that I started with. Most of the pieces are just this 2 x 3 pine that my dad brought home from work FOR FREE, so I had to use it.I modified the frame a bit so the gradient of the ramp wasn’t too much and played with the front a little bit.
I bought a clown mask online from Ebay and used some plastic, joint compound mix and expanding polyurethane foam to get the head just right. I put a wooden dowel through the head and fit it into the barbecue rotisserie. After cutting a hole in the mouth I put a large 90 degree elbow of 4 inch diameter PVC to take golf balls through the mouth and shoot them straight down into the PVC below it.
Above is the beginning of the ramp that I had to construct for a ball return. I added a few more platforms, painted them blue, and got the balls going in the right direction. I added some PVC to separate the balls that made it in the clown’s mouth.
This barbecue rotisserie had been very useful in my past Halloween displays and I think it has found a permanent place under the tent spinning the clown’s head. I added a couple of lights to make sure the clown has a bright and happy face all the time.
I painted some little wooden animals I got at a hobby store and put them along the sides that I painted yellow, red and blue. It ended up looking really good with the line of shadowed animals as if they were marching into the circus tent.
I had a friend of mine (Miss Ashley Childs) paint two wonderful pictures on the sides of the frame. They came out awesome as hell. You can see the little door on the bottom right that you retrieve the balls from.
I bought some letters and painted them to be glued behind the clown’s head. The phrase ‘Clown Alley’ is the place that clowns get dressed and put their makeup on before they go out for a show
The final touches I added were this flag and hole stand. I took the stand from Old Pro Golf (which is now shut down.) It was the greatest place on earth. I painted it and added a spot to put the bucket of balls on.

Clown Music

Mom Putting

In the end, the hole turned out better than I ever imagined. I added some chicken wire in the front to make sure no one really tried to cheat because the hole is quite difficult. I bought a little device from radio shacked and wired up some speakers so that when the ball goes in the clown’s mouth circus music plays for about 10 seconds. You can record anything you want on the message and it’s pretty cool for 10 bucks. I brought it to my elementary school's carnival one year and the kids loved it. Despite their insane swings I had a lot of fun. I managed to sell my whole on EBAY August of 2004 for $38.50. If you don't believe me have a look for youself HERE.
